The Millennium Foundation provides funding to Westmead Millennium Institute, a group of approximately 400 scientists committed to finding cures to the following life-threatening diseases:

Infection and Immunity

At Westmead Millennium Institute, our scientists are busy researching fungal, bacterial and viral diseases and translating the results into improved health outcomes for all of us. They're also working on finding the genes responsible for auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes and other allergic diseases.

Neuroscience and Vision

How does the brain work? What causes mental disorders and how do we treat them? They’re just some of the questions our scientists are asking every day. They’re currently studying brain disorders such as ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, epilepsy, and alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer

Breast cancer, skin cancers, ovarian cancer, bowel cancer, and leukaemia are just some of the cancers our researchers are studying. Cancer research is focused on understanding cell growth, our body’s natural defences against cancer, and the relationships between viruses and cancer.

Cardio-respiratory

The Institute is also focusing on researching respiratory conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and asthma, plus two major problem areas in cardiology; ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation.

The Storr Liver Unit (SLU) is a crack team of researchers exploring the diverse causes of liver injury, such as metabolic factors and viruses, drugs and toxins. This internationally-acclaimed team’s long-term goals are to improve outcomes for patients with chronic liver diseases and prevent liver cancer.
