Disease of the Month: Prostate Cancer

Max Hadlow had little warning. By the time his prostate cancer was discovered in 2005, it was already in the advanced stages. Max’s only chance against this aggressive cancer was to undergo surgery, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. In what can only be described as an emotional rollercoaster, Max spent the next few years bouncing from positive milestones, to frustrating setbacks. In 2006 he encountered the biggest setback of them all when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Through all of this, Max has been doing his part towards the search for a cure. At the time of his diagnosis, the ex-mayor of Goulburn was already a proud supporter of The Millennium Foundation. Luckily, prostate cancer didn’t slow him down for long. Just six weeks after his last chemotherapy treatment in 2006, he upheld this support when he rode 300 kilometres for Pollie Pedal, an annual 1,000km fundraising cycling event lead by The Hon Tony Abbott. His commitment to the cause through this difficult time shows just how important it is for us to boost the funds of leading researchers studying the causes and treatments of prostate cancer.

Watching someone close to you live with a terminal or debilitating disease, is heartbreaking. But if people like Max have hope, it can make a world of difference. By supporting The Millennium Foundation, we can make sure the fight for a cure continues.
